Lai Zhigang, also known as Yunchan, is a contemporary Chinese artist of Accumulated-ink landscape painting, the second-generation successor of Li Keran, and a member of the Chinese Artists Association. Lai was born in Bengbu, Anhui in 1963. At the age of 12, he began to learn from the local painter Mr. Ding Chucai. In 2001, he studied in the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2002, he was admitted to the master's class of the "Jia Youfu Studio" of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. On the basis of the systematic education in the Academy of Fine Arts, he devoted himself to copying, sketching, and creation, and won the support and appreciation of Jia Youfu. In 2005, he joined the Li Xiaoke Art Studio of the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts for training. On the basis of inheriting the broad, vigorous and profound Li-style landscape paintings, he developed a new style of Accumulated-ink landscapes. On the basis of inheriting the broad, vigorous, and profound Li-style landscape paintings, he developed a new style of Accumulated-ink landscapes. In the description of stones, he broke through the techniques of contemporary landscapes and created his own characteristics, and won the Golden Color Award of Chinese Fine Arts.
Lai Zhigang's fame in today's landscape painting community stems from his creative individual expression based on his tireless study of the essence of traditional painting. As Jia Youfu said, his works are explosive, tense and shocking, and are no longer limited by the size of the painting, which is very impressive. Lai Zhigang said that he always believes that Accumulated-ink is not only the best at expressing the Chinese landscape in terms of volume, quality, block surface, structure and spatial level, but also grand and magnificent, with the reality and possibility of infinitely expanding humanistic time and space.
During his sojourn in Taiwan in 2017 and 2018, Lai created a series of new Accumulated-ink works with themes such as Sun Moon Lake, Ali Mountain, Jade Mountain, and Taroko. In his first exhibition in Taiwan this time, more than 50 works including ink painting and sketching will be displayed. It is hoped that through the exhibition, the people of Taiwan can get to know the artist better, and that his works will attract more exchanges and resonance when they are exhibited in the National Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.
